Utterly unique gas pendant, c.1860's. This is an example of the Turkish influence in lighting used for the faddish designing of spaces in a Turkish or Mid-eastern motif. Areas, nooks and corners would be fashioned in this style, implying the influence of an "opium den" (often complete with hukas). It was never electrified until now, and still has its original "electric-start" wire running through it (a wire, usually in wealthier homes that an owner would have installed, in very early electric days, to a spot of convenience, say a switch on a wall. Pressing the swith could then create a spark at the point of gas flow) . Made as a huge hanging medallion, it has very intricate designing and ornate, fine cast brass pieces throughout. A few brass pcs of small ornament are missing, and will be duplicated and matched in, for full restoring. All of its patina is unaltered from the 1800's. The colored glass jewels and beautiful crystal lenses - A FULL SET ON EACH SIDE, FRONT AND BACK -- give a splendid lighting effect, even from afar.
